Symptoms

VMware host is unable to see iSCSI LUNS if they are assigned to an initiator group, but the VMware host will see the iSCSI LUNS if they are assigned to "All initiators".

Changes

This was a new configuration of a VMware host mapping iSCSI LUNS from a ZFS Storage Array

Cause

The IQN from the VMware host was using the hostname as part of it. The hostname was all capital letters.   Example: iqn.2017-09.com.companyname:HOSTNAME

The iSCSI specification only allows lower case letters in the IQN.   Example: iqn.2017-09.com.companyname:hostname

The ZFS Appliance will only allow lower case letters to be entered into the initiator field.

Solution

The solution is to change the IQN name on the VMware host to use lower case letters and other valid characters.

VMware can provide instruction on how to make this change.
