StorageTek Virtual Storage Manager System 7 (VSM7) - Version 7.0.0 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

VSM7 internally installed ES1-24 network switches has issues connecting to existing customer network switches.

The VSM7 cannot ping customer network through the internal switch.

Oracle VSM7 switch can see the customer switch mac address but the customer switch cannot see the VSM7 ES1-24 network switch mac addresses.

Cause

The issue is that external to the VSM7, the port-channels on the customer switch are set up in TRUNK mode.  The VSM7 switch is not set up for trunking.

This creates a mismatch where the customer switch side is using tagged VLANs and the VSM7 is using untagged VLANs.  The VSM7 has no need to share VLANs between the switches.

Solution

VSM7 is an appliance and individual configurations of the internal switch should not be changed.

The external switch engineer should address this in one of two ways:

1. The switchport mode would need to change from TRUNK to ACCESS.

Remove the following commands:
      switchport mode trunk
switchport trunk allowed vlan <current vlan #>

Replace with the following commands
      switchport mode access
switchport access vlan <#>                                 <#> = customer preferred vlan ID

2. The switch engineer would set up a native vlan to an appropriate VLAN #.
This would tell the switch to treat any untagged traffic destined for that VLAN #.
