Applies to:

StorageTek T10000D Tape Drive - Version All Versions and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Head oscillation can cause write perm errors. These are typically in the 39xx FSC range.

Cause

Head oscillation can occur on certain drives.

Solution

If head oscillation is present SPLAT will detect the condition and issue a warning when event logs for the tape drive are processed. If you see perm write errors and also see the head oscillation warning message in SPLAT then the drive should be replaced otherwise the head oscillation warning can be ignored.

T10000D drive code at 4.12.106 completely removes any concern regarding head oscillation. Severe head oscillation could be a concern if the drive was running on code prior to 4.12.106.
