Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120 Server - Version All Versions and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Under certain conditions, the output of the Solaris command "iostat -En" doesn't display the Serial Number of a disk device.

Cause

The cause will be described in the Solution section of this document.

Solution

A) The Solaris command "iostat -En" will display the Serial Number of a disk device whenever the disk in question is a single physical disk.

Example:

c1t4d0 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 0 Transport Errors: 0
Vendor: HITACHI Product: H101414SCSUN146G Revision: SA23 Serial No: 0809EJ26VA
Size: 146.80GB <146800115712 bytes>
Media Error: 0 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 0 Recoverable: 0
Illegal Request: 0 Predictive Failure Analysis: 0

c1t0d0 Soft Errors: 47 Hard Errors: 4 Transport Errors: 4
Vendor: SEAGATE Product: ST914602SSUN146G Revision: 0603 Serial No: 0750945TKR
Size: 146.80GB <146800115712 bytes>
Media Error: 0 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 1 Recoverable: 47
Illegal Request: 0 Predictive Failure Analysis: 0

B) The Solaris command "iostat -En" will not display the Serial Number of a disk device under the following conditions:

1) If the Product is "CD/DVDW", then it is a CDROM / DVD drive. These don't have serial numbers.

Example:

c0t0d0 Soft Errors: 3 Hard Errors: 0 Transport Errors: 0
Vendor: TSSTcorp Product: CD/DVDW TS-T632A Revision: SR03 Serial No:
Size: 0.00GB <0 bytes>
Media Error: 0 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 0 Recoverable: 0
Illegal Request: 3 Predictive Failure Analysis: 0

Remark: The information "Size: 0.00GB" means that no medium has been inserted into the drive.

2) If the Vendor is LSILOGIC, then iostat is showing a LSI Hardware RAID volume which consists of two underlying internal disk drives.
There is no way that Solaris will see the serial numbers of the disk drives in this case.

Example:

c1t0d0 Soft Errors: 2 Hard Errors: 0 Transport Errors: 0
Vendor: LSILOGIC Product: Logical Volume Revision: 3000 Serial No:
Size: 146.56GB <146561286144 bytes>
Media Error: 0 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 0 Recoverable: 0
Illegal Request: 2 Predictive Failure Analysis: 0

Remark: The size of the logical Hardware RAID volume is "146.56GB", which could be mistaken for a size of a single physical 146GB disk drive.
But this is a "RAID 1" volume which results in the fact that two physical 146GB disks form a logical 146GB volume.

3) If a LUN from an external Storage has been mapped to the operating system, then iostat -En won't
display the serial number either because the LUN usually consists of several underlying physical disk drives.

Example:

c3t60080E5000369618000004CC5143DDFDd0 Soft Errors: 6 Hard Errors: 0 Transport Errors: 0
Vendor: SUN Product: LCSM100_F Revision: 0780 Serial No:
Size: 299.46GB <299462299648 bytes>
Media Error: 0 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 0 Recoverable: 6
Illegal Request: 2 Predictive Failure Analysis: 0

4) If a single physical disk has failed, then it is possible that the failure is so severe that the operating system won't be able to read any information
regarding the affected disk. In that case you won't see that disk's serial number in iostat -En.

Example:

c1t1d0 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 63 Transport Errors: 0
Vendor: SEAGATE Product: ST914602SSUN146G Revision: 0603 Serial No:
Size: 0.00GB <0 bytes>
Media Error: 6 Device Not Ready: 56 No Device: 1 Recoverable: 0
Illegal Request: 0 Predictive Failure Analysis: 0
