Applies to:

Oracle SuperCluster M7 Hardware - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
SPARC M7-8 - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
SPARC M7-16 - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Customer is unable to reset the SP where he/she's logged into:

Oracle(R) Integrated Lights Out Manager

Version 3.2.9.1.b r116246

Copyright (c) 2017, Oracle and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved.

Hostname: ORACLE-SP0-SPM0

-> reset /SP
reset: Target /SP cannot be reset

Cause

Each M7-x platform has two Service Processors (SPs), one Active and one Standby. Each SP has its own IP address and serial port, and there is a 3rd IP address, which will always get you to the active SP.

On M7-8, you can have 1 or 2 domains, 1 or 2 DCUs. For each domain, each SP has a Service Processor module (SPM), managing its domain. Each SPM has an IP address, which can be used to perform administrative task for the domain it is managing.

On M7-16, you can have 1 to 4 domains, 1 to 4 DCUs. For each domain, there is a Service Processor Proxy (SPP), managing its domain. Each SPP has 2 redundant SPMs, of which 1 is active. Each SPP has an IP address, which can be used to perform administrative task for the domain it is managing.

Under normal circumstances, all platform and domain administration must take place through the Active SP.
In the case addressed by this document, customer was logged in to one of the SPMs that was not performing as Active SP for the platform. While not being logged into the Active SP, user is not allowed to perform platform related commands:

-> show Servers/PDomains/
show: Invalid target /Servers/PDomains

-> reset SP/
reset: Target /SP cannot be reset

->

Solution

 To perform platform administration tasks, make sure you are logged in to the IP address that refers to the platform's Active SP:
