SymptomsMany append errors. Append errors are any error where the FSC description says that the drive "could not obtain a signature..." 3975,395B, 3661, and 3656 are common FSCs for append errors. CauseMarginal write system in the tape drive. SolutionAppend type errors can occur if the tape is mounted in a drive and is told to append some data however when the drive tries to sync up on previously written data (so that it can write some new data behind it) the drive is unable to sync up on (cannot read) the previously written data. If you see many append errors across multiple tapes on a single drive then you have a defective drive. The drive is having problems appending to data that it just wrote. Drives exhibiting this behavior need to be replaced as it has a marginal write system.
