Symptoms

Under certain Network conditions, Sun Rack II PDU Monitoring Units may hang or become unresponsive to Network Connections. The PDU otherwise continues to operate normally.
The monitoring unit will began to work normally again after being reset, but may immediately hang again or may work for some time and then hang again later.

Changes

Changes to the Network Configuration such as adding Security scanning can trigger the behavior, typically multiple PDU's within the environment will be affected.

Cause

older model "Original" PDU's or newer "Enhanced" PDU's with downrev firmware may be unable to cope with certain kinds of Network activity which can cause them to stop responding normally. This can include, but is not limited to:

Network Security IP/Port scanning
Multiple SSH's running simultaneously
Frequently opening/closing TCP connections
Incorrect application closing leading to hung session/too many reconnect attempts
IPv6 traffic on network
Other possible triggers can also exist.

The PDU's will otherwise continue to supply power so there is generally no impact or outage, but monitoring alerts may be triggered which can be annoying or alarming.

Solution

MANUALLY REBOOTING THE PDU MONITORING UNIT

STANDARD/ORIGINAL PDU's
How to reset the Sun Rack II Original PDU metering unit in an Engineered System. (Doc ID 1570811.1)
Press and hold the red button on the monitoring unit until the 5 second countdown begins.
Release the button, then tap again to initiate the reboot

ENHANCED PDU'S
How to reset the Sun Rack II Enhanced PDU Metering Unit in an Engineered System. (Doc ID 2188300.1)
Press and hold the 2 red buttons until the 5 second countdown begins.
Release both buttons, then tap them both again simultaneously to initiate the reboot.
If the monitoring unit is unresponsive or cannot be successfully rebooted you can also try resetting it with the paperclip hole located between the two red buttons

EXCLUDE MONITORING UNIT FROM SCANS/UPGRADE FIRMWARE

Manually rebooting the monitoring unit may temporarily workaround the issue, but most likely will not permanently resolve as the underlaying trigger likely still exists. To more permanently resolve use one of the following options.

1)ALL MODEL'S OF PDU - Exclude the PDU IP's from the security scans. (Customer should consult with their Network Facility support team). This option is most suited for the original PDU's which do not have updated enhanced firmware.

2)NEWER MODELS WITH "ENHANCED" MONITORING UNITS - Upgrade the firmware to 2.07, Patch#25393172. This is the recommended solution for all "enhanced" PDU's.

If you are not sure which model PDU you have, locate the PDU Part # and contact Oracle Technical Services for more help. you can find the PDU Part # either printed on a label on the PDU itself, or in the shipping manifest, or other paperwork. It will also often be reported in the web interface of the other PDU in the rack (don't assume that other rack's will have the same PDU).

FOR ORACLE TSE's - The firmware upgrade can be performed by anyone, but it's OK to send an FE to do the upgrade if requested.
