Symptoms

The customer has a clustered ZS3-4 Storage appliance.

Each appliance head had an upgrade when another 8 DIMMs were installed to make a total 1TB of memory.

But the second appliance head only registered 960 GB of memory shown within the BUI -  under the maintenance hardware view.

Changes

 New 16GB DIMMs installed to upgrade to 1TB

Cause

From the support bundle under the directory hw/detail.aksh logs,  the new installed DIMMs were not showing the size attribute in the hardware details output:

chassis-000 memory-068
----------------------
          label = P3/MR1 DIMM 0
        present = true
        faulted = false
   manufacturer = Hynix Semiconductor Inc.
          model = 16384MB DDR3 SDRAM DIMM
           part = 001-0003-01,HMT42GR7MFR4A-PB
         serial = 00AD011419902667E0

The "size =" attribute is missing.

And from the hw/fmtopo.txt this showed only 60 DIMMs as compared with the peer head which has 64.

The DIMMs associated with the Processor P3  MR1, showed only 4 DIMMs available

label string P3/MR1 DIMM 2
label string P3/MR1 DIMM 3
label string P3/MR1 DIMM 6
label string P3/MR1 DIMM 7

Therefore the DIMM pairs 0,1 and 4,5 were missing the size attribute.  They should have all show the size = 17179869184.

The ILOM snapshot did NOT have the same issue:

/System/Memory
Properties:
health = OK
health_details = -
installed_memory = 1024 GB
installed_dimms = 64
max_dimms = 64

The SP (ILOM) was able see all the details of the new DIMMs.

Solution

Run the following command to force the hardware view to be updated:

ssh to the appliance CLI:

CLI> raw hardware.refresh()
This will return "result = 0"

Allow the appliance to update the hardware view, then re-check the ZFS-SA BUI or CLI.  Then confirm the "size" is now shown.

For example - select one of the memory DIMMs affected to view it from the BUI or the CLI:

e.g.

CLI> maintenance hardware select chassis-000 select memory select memory-068 show

Confirm the memory DIMM correctly shows a "size" entry.

(In this particular case, the customer also upgraded the appliance software (which required a reboot) and therefore a re-scan of the installed hardware components was also carried out.)
