Symptoms

BUI and CLI may fail with error "illegal control character" while navigating to service, logs, updates, hardware etc.

CLI error :

blzfs02:> maintenance system updates firmwareUpdatesDetails
error: An unanticipated system error occurred: call for param #1 to system.push
failed: illegal control character 4 at position 16

This may be due to transient failure, or a software defect. If this problem
  persists, contact your service provider.

 BUI error :

 BUI Error

Cause

This issue is encountered if a control character is encountered for any of the Hardware components.

AKD reads the hardware configuration and reads the details like Serial no. , FRU part no. etc,

If these details are corrupted and an illegal control character is seen by AKD, this kind of error message is seen.

This is a known issue with older AK firmware - older than 2013.1.5.4

Bug 20287135 - BUI error: "illegal control character" while attempting to navigate to logs

Example:  fmtopo output for one of the Memory Module (DIMM) shows control character :

label string P2/MR0 DIMM 1
fru-part string M39à^D^DG70BH0-YK0 <<<<<

Solution

1.  Replace the component seen with control character.

2.  Upgrade the Appliance Firmware Release to the latest which fixes this bug.
