Sun StorageTek SL8500 Modular Library System - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
Information in this document applies to any platform.
Grandfathered license

Symptoms

After a firmware upgrade has been performed to 8.51 with a partitioned library that was previously configured with firmware level 7.01 or greater and the associated SLC code, the SL8500 has an exposure to have less than the expected active cell count. Example: About 50% (5,000 of 10,000) cells set to inactive after the firmware upgrade as denoted in SLC; System Detail---Properties---General---Active Cells.

Changes

 Firmware upgrade to FRS_8.51

Cause

About 5000 cells (50%) changed status from Active Status to Inactive Status across all rails after firmware upgrade to 8.51

This has been reproduced in engineering lab.
It appears that only SL8500 libraries are affected that have partitions created on or before firmware 7.07 and that only libraries with expansion frames are affected

This could not be reproduce on a base SL8500 with partitions

Solution

The only thing the customer needs to do to change the Inactive Status back to Active Status is log onto SLC (6.60 is the proper version for SL8500 8.51).
Navigate to the Partitions screen, Commit tab. Then, just push the apply button.
Once the apply is finished, no auditing is done, but all cells are applied.
If you go back to the System Detail -> Properties -> General screen on SLC, you will see that all cells are active.

See below workaround SLC screen shots:

Work Around:

If the library is partitioned and the library is fully licensed (or Grandfathered),
after the upgrade to FRS_8.51+ the Active Cell count displayed on SLConsole -> Properties -> General .....may be less than expected.
In the following picture, the Active Cell count should be 6632, but is currently set to only 3290.

When accessing the Partition Summary screen, the Allocation Summary shows as one would expect when the partitions are set up

To correct the Active Cell Count, now simply click on the Commit Tab, then click on the Apply button. When the text box shown below pops up, click yes:

Another text box will be displayed, as shown below, that there are no changes...Again click yes.

After the commit, the Active Cell count will be corrected, as shown below.
