Changes
There is a fault on a PCI card. FE replaced the card with a new PCI card and an amber LED is lit on IOU#0/PCI#3.
Cause
The PCI carrier/holder that houses the PCI card was determined faulty by the FE.
The carrier could not be properly secured with the lever at the right angle.
Solution
The following provides steps for different situations when encountering PCI card not detected.
Minimum PCI configuration
- Insert individual PCI cards one at a time
- Power on the platform
- Observe the PCI carrier LED lights
- Review the diag post log for any post failures
- Power off and add additional PCI card, follow by power on
- The previous PCI card that cause the diag post to fail should be the card
- Remove the previous PCI card and reapply diag post with power cycle
Verify PCI slot LEDs
LED Type |
Status |
Description |
Power |
On (green) |
Indicates that the power to the PCI slot is turned on. The PCI card cannot be removed. |
|
Off |
Indicates that the power to the PCI slot is turned off. The PCI card can be removed. |
|
Attention |
On (amber) |
Indicates that an error occurred in the PCI slot. |
|
|
Off |
Indicates the normal state of the PCI slot. |
|
|
Blinking (amber) |
Indicates that the card in this PCI slot is a target device for replacement. |

Verify PCI Card in different IOU/PCI slot
- The PCI card and PCI carrier must seat into the IOU slot properly in order to get the led power “ON” status
- Ensure that the PCI card is installed properly and housed in the PCI carrier
- Ensure that the PCI carrier with the PCI card are seated securely in the IOU PCI slot
- The PCI carrier lever/arm must be able to attach into the slot the right angle.
Verify and determine IOU slot
- Swap the IOU with another IOU that is known to be working
- If the issue persists in the known working IOU there could be a back plane problem
- It is very unlikely to be a faulty IOU with the "POST:PCICH link up failed" event
- Below indicates a post failed the PCI card

Verify PCI card through the OS plugin driver
- PCI cards are hot pluggable on Mx000 servers with Solaris 10 9/10 or 142909-17 or later
- To enable the hotplug service, type the following command:
# svcadm enable svc:/system/hotplug:default
- See hotplug/cfgadm manpage
pcixhp (XX): card is inserted in the slot #
pcixhp (XX): SLOT_CONFIGURE event occured for pci slot #, Slot disabled for auto-configuration.
pcixhp (XX): card is CONFIGURED in the slot #
pcixhp (XX): SLOT_UNCONFIGURE event for pci slot # ignored, Slot disabled for auto-configuration.
pcixhp (XX): card is UNCONFIGURED in the slot #
