Symptoms

After installation of Oracle Solaris 11.3 image on Sparc S7-2, Sparc S7-2L or Netra Sparc S7-2 Servers the onboard Network interfaces are not visible (configured) in Solaris.

- no faults have been reported and the interfaces are visible in OBP:

{0} ok show-nets
a) /pci@300/pci@1/pci@0/pci@1/network@0,3
b) /pci@300/pci@1/pci@0/pci@1/network@0,2
c) /pci@300/pci@1/pci@0/pci@1/network@0,1
d) /pci@300/pci@1/pci@0/pci@1/network@0

- in OS, no entries for the devices exist in /etc/path_to_inst

- prtdiag shows the network interface devices, but they are not configured:

===================== IO Devices =====================
Slot + Bus Name + Model Max Speed Cur Speed
Status Type Path /Width /Width

/SYS/MB/PCIE_SWITCH0 PCIE network 8.0GT/x8 8.0GT/x8

/SYS/MB/PCIE_SWITCH0 PCIE network 8.0GT/x8 8.0GT/x8
/pci@300/pci@1/pci@0/pci@1/network

Cause

The onboard network interfaces require the i40e driver which is not included in Solaris 11.3 images below SRU9.
With installation images Solaris 11.3 SRU9 or later, the driver is included and the interfaces will be configured.

# grep "/pci@300/pci@1/pci@0/pci@1/network" /etc/path_to_inst

Solution

Use Solaris 11.3 SRU 9 or later installation image, links to installation images are provided in Doc ID 2045311.1.
In case the interfaces are still missing after installation of Solaris 11.3 SRU 9 or later, please open a Service Request.

Note - The minimum supported OS version for the S7 platforms is Solaris 11.3 SRU 9. So if you are running into this issue than chances are you are running the S7 with an unsupported OS version. Please verify and load the correct OS version for S7 support. This version can be found in the following S7 Product Notes:

S7-2 Product Notes
S7-2L Product Notes
Netra S7-2 Product Notes
