Brocade 300 Switch - Version All Versions and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Upgrading Brocade 300 FC Switch firmware in steps by applying 4 patches one at a time.

First 2 upgrades took about 20 mins and were fine, then on the third upgrade , the upgrade process seems to be hung as firmwareshow command still shows "WARNING: Firmwaredownload is in progress." even after it's been running for hours.

The upgrade is going from version v7.2.1d to v7.3.1c. , IO through the switch is running fine, just the upgrade process firmwaredonwload seems to be hung

switch01:root> version
Kernel: 2.6.14.2
Fabric OS: v7.2.1d
Made on: Tue Nov 18 11:19:48 2014
Flash: Fri Nov 11 21:43:42 2016
BootProm: 1.0.11

switch01:root> firmwareshow
Appl Primary/Secondary Versions
------------------------------------------
FOS v7.2.1d
v7.3.1c

WARNING: Firmwaredownload is in progress.

Cause

Upgrade process was interrupted for some unknown reason.

Solution

Enter

hareboot

command to reboot processor without interrupting IO.

Once rebooted,

enter this command to verify the partitions are synchronized:

firmwareshow

If displaying same partition info, then try:

firmwarecommit

If this command is unable to run, then we would need to look at a cold reboot (disruptive) and again, once up re-enter the 'firmwareshow' command and 'firmwarecommit' if needed.

or call Oracle Support to open a new SR to assist you on this issue, the following information will be required: Supportsave and the command 'bootenv' from root access

Example

Expected commands during the firmware upgrade process:

switch01:root> firmwaredownloadstatus
[1]: Sat Nov 12 21:29:38 2016
Firmware is being downloaded to the switch. This step may take up to 30 minutes.

[2]: Sat Nov 12 21:36:57 2016
Firmware has been downloaded to the secondary partition of the switch.

This is expected while process is going on (it should take no more than 30 min)

switch01:root> firmwareshow

Appl Primary/Secondary Versions
------------------------------------------
FOS v7.3.1c
v7.4.1d

WARNING: Firmwaredownload is in progress.

...after several minutes, we can see this was completed:

switch01:root> firmwareshow
Appl Primary/Secondary Versions
------------------------------------------
FOS v7.4.1d
v7.4.1d
