After a firmware upgrade from SysFW 9.5.x (or earlier) to 9.6.x (or later), existing faults can get a misclassified Subsystem in "show /System/Log/List" output.
The BUI will also misclassify the faulted subsystem.

Symptoms

After a firmware upgrade from SysFW 9.5.x (or earlier) to 9.6.x (or later), existing faults can get a misclassified Subsystem.

For instance, the System Log shows the misclassification of a PSU as follows:

-> show -script /System/Log/List

Log
ID    Date/Time                         Event Type                             Subsystem

The BUI will also misclassify the faulted subsystem.

Changes

Upgrade from 9.5.x (or earlier) to 9.6.x (or later) for M5/M6-32

Upgrade from 9.5.x (or earlier) to 9.7.x (or later) for M7 (there is no SysFW 9.6.x for M7)

Cause

A new Subsystem category has been added to the list of Subsystem values in SysFW 9.6.x (or later). This has caused a shift in the ID number associated to some "Subsystem"

Subsystem ID#SysFW 9.5.x (or earlier)SysFW 9.6.x (or later)
1 Unknown Unknown
2 System System
3 CPU Module CPU Module
4 Domain Configuration Unit Cartridge
5 Processors Domain Configuration Unit
6 Memory Processors
7 Power Memory
8 Cooling Power
9 Storage Cooling
10 Networking Storage
11 I/O Modules Networking
12 PCI Devices I/O Modules
13 Firmware PCI Devices
14 Blade Firmware
15 Servers Blade
16 Other Removable Devices Servers
17   Other Removable Devices

Based on the above table, one can easily see that a "Power" issue on a system running 9.5.x (or earlier) has a Subsystem ID number equal to 7.

When running SysFW 9.6.x (or later), Subsystem ID number 7 is "Memory"; hence a "Power" issue that occurred while system was running 9.5.x (or later) will be reported as a "Memory" issue after upgrading to 9.6.x (or later).

When running SysFW 9.6.x (or later), an error that occurred prior to the upgrade to SysFW 9.6.x (or later) with the Subsystem listed in the first column should be interpreted as the corresponding Subsystem listed in the second column.

Networking I/O Modules

New errors occurring after the upgrade to SysFW 9.6.x (or later) will have the correct Subsystem value (and should not be re-interpreted according to the above table).

see Bug 24703066 - "show /System/Log/List" is reporting the wrong "Subsystem"

Solution

  • Fix all hardware errors prior to upgrading to SysFW 9.6.x (or later) to avoid the a BUI status page with misclassified faults.
  • Interpret the Subsystem of old errors [errors that occurred prior to upgrade to 9.6.x (or later) ] using the above table.
