This may apply to all SPARC and x86 platforms with both ILOM service processor and locate buttons. The problem is usually reported as unresponsive service processor, and is easy to be falsely diagnosed as service processor failure. SymptomsUnable to access the service processor using web or ssh. Connecting with a terminal or terminal emulator, it's found the service processor is in preboot menu. The symptom may be intermittent. Sometimes the service processor may boot up into ILOM successfully after a reset. CauseAny locate button that is stuck could cause the service processor to enter preboot menu. SolutionFix stuck locate button issue. Depending on the platform model, this may require re-seat or replacement of the specific component. Note: There may be more than one locate button stuck, so a visual inspection is required to check all of them. In one case as an example, a Sun Blade 6000 system has an unresponsive CMM. But the locate button on the CMM is fine. The culprit is the stuck locate button on the Front Indicator Module(FIM).
