Sun Blade 6000 System - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
Information in this document applies to any platform.
This may apply to all SPARC and x86 platforms with both ILOM service processor and locate buttons.
The problem is usually reported as unresponsive service processor, and is easy to be falsely diagnosed as service processor failure.

Symptoms

Unable to access the service processor using web or ssh.

Connecting with a terminal or terminal emulator, it's found the service processor is in preboot menu.

The symptom may be intermittent. Sometimes the service processor may boot up into ILOM successfully after a reset.

Cause

Any locate button that is stuck could cause the service processor to enter preboot menu.

Solution

Fix stuck locate button issue. Depending on the platform model, this may require re-seat or replacement of the specific component.

Note: There may be more than one locate button stuck, so a visual inspection is required to check all of them.

In one case as an example, a Sun Blade 6000 system has an unresponsive CMM. But the locate button on the CMM is fine. The culprit is the stuck locate button on the Front Indicator Module(FIM).

It's the designed behavior that pressing and holding the locate button while resetting the SP brings it to preboot menu. A stuck locate button may trigger the same effect.
