Symptoms

Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) Solid State Drives (SSDs) will not create a Drive Group and remain in a Not Used state.

Changes

Six or twelve FIPS SSDs have been added to an existing Drive Enclosure.

The two FIPS drive types that may create this issue are:

HSFAC2DA4SUN400G/Sunset Cover Plus 400GB FIPS SSD

HSFAC2DA2SUN1.6T/HGST Sunset Cove Plus 1.6TB FIPS SSD

Cause

FIPS drives are capable of using data encryption for additional security. Because all of the SSDs in a Drive Enclosure share a floating hot spare, a mixture of FIPS and non-FIPS drives cannot support encryption. While encryption is not yet available for the FS1-2, software versions before R6.2.4 will see FIPS drives as being encrypted. The net result is that adding FIPS drives to an existing non-FIPS Drive Enclosure will result in some (if twelve FIPS drives are added) or all (if six FIPS drives are added) of the new drives to remain in a Not Used state because they will not have enough of their drive type to form Drive Groups.

Solution

This issue is addressed in R6.2.4 and beyond. If the FIPS drives have already been added, remove them and upgrade the FS1-2 to R6.2.4 or higher. Once the upgrade is completed, reinstall the drives.

NOTE: before any drive model can be used in R6.2.4 and above, the firmware associated with that drive model must already be installed on the FS1-2.
