Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

The Power-On Self Test (POST) will show an output like the following one:

0:1:0>ERROR: TEST = NIU fault check
0:1:0>H/W under test = MB/CMP0/NIU0
0:1:0>Repair Instructions: Replace items in order listed by 'H/W under test' above.

0:1:0>Repair Instructions: Replace items in order listed by 'H/W under test' above.
0:1:0>MSG = ERROR: NC Fault Check 1.
0:1:0>END_ERROR

On the server's Service Processor (ALOM), the following POST results can be seen:

sc> showfaults
Last POST Run: Sun May 29 18:42:12 2016

Post Status: Failed devices: MB/CMP0/NIU0 MB/CMP0/NIU1
ID FRU Fault
1 /SYS/MB SP detected fault: /SYS/MB/CMP0/NIU0 Forced fail (POST)
2 /SYS/MB SP detected fault: /SYS/MB/CMP0/NIU1 Forced fail (POST)

The affected components MB/CMP0/NIU0 and/or MB/CMP0/NIU1 may become disabled by POST.

Cause

Similar to: Bug 15436482 : SUNBT6626445 INTERMITTENT POST FAILURES OBSERVED ON MB/CMP0/NIU1. Status 91 - Closed, Could Not Reproduce.

The CPU internal Network IO Unit has failed during POST.

Solution

If you observe the mentioned symptoms, please enable the disabled components, then power cycle the server and clear the fault:

sc> enablecomponent /SYS/MB/CMP0/NIU0
sc> enablecomponent /SYS/MB/CMP0/NIU1

sc> poweroff -fy
sc> clearasrdb
sc> poweron -c

If the problem reappears, please open a Service Request (SR) at Oracle and attach to the SR the output file of the Solaris Explorer Data Collector as well as a console log with the output of the POST.
TSE should qualify the symptoms and arrange the replacement of the Motherboard.
