RTD DDDDDD ON VTSS XXXXXXXX RETURNED ECAM ERROR CC=5 RC=113

Explanation: No real tape cartridge was mounted. When the command was initially
sent to the RTD, the RTD was online and ready; but before the mount could be
satisfied, the RTD drive dropped ready.
System Action: The request fails.

User Response: Eject the MVC cartridge and examine it for any visual defect that may
be preventing it from mounting. If you find a problem with the physical cartridge,
have your site’s support services examine it for further diagnosis, or contact
StorageTek Hardware Support.

Cause

VSM6 RTD that is already online reacts to a VARY ONLINE command from another host when the other host is being started.

VSM6 should have ignored the ECAM request to vary online the RTD when the RTD is already online.

Instead VSM6 did a cleanup of the RTD resulting in a READY of the drive. This was followed by a dismount of the MVC, ECAM CC=5 RC=113, and re-mount the MVC. After that operations continue running as normal.

This is also visible in the ECAM traffic in the VSM6 logs as ecam-t commands 123 and 124.

Solution

The VSM6 fix is in microcode 6.3.0.05.000. VSM6 will no longer issue a VARY ONLINE when an RTD or vRTD is already online.
