Solaris boot may fail due to a hardware fault in the Single-Ended Ultra Wide SCSI/Fast Ethernet SunSwift (FreshChoice) Host Bus Adapter. This can happen even when the target of the OBP boot command is not attached to the FreshChoice HBA.

Symptoms

Messages such as these from the ISP SCSI Host Bus Adapter Driver early in the Solaris boot sequence may indicate faulty HBA hardware:

Cause

The messages are likely to be caused by a failing ISP chip on the Host Bus Adapter identified by the physical device path described in the message.

In this case, /ssm@0,0/pci@18,700000/pci@1/SUNW,isptwo@4 is the SCSI path of a PCI SunSwift card.

See SPARC Platforms: Matrix of Recognized Device Paths (Doc ID 1005907.1) for help in decoding the path

The messages are further described in the man page for the Solaris isp driver.

Solution

Replace the card identified in the message.
