Oracle FS1-2 Flash Storage System - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

The Oracle FS System Manager GUI or fscli enclosure -list -details output lists one or more IO Module (IOM) firmware revisions that do not match the other IO Module (IOM) firmware revisions.

Cause

An IOM was replaced, and the new IOM came pre-installed with a different firmware revision than the rest of the IOM's installed in the system.

It is by system design that IOM firmware is not updated on-the-fly (this behavior may change in a future FS1 software release).

Performing a non-disruptive software update will not update that IOM's firmware.

Solution

Currently, the only way to update IOM firmware is to perform a Shutdown and then Restart of the system software.

From the GUI:  Click on menu item Oracle FS and select Restart.

From the fscli command line:  fscli system -restart

NOTE: Issuing a System Restart will disrupt data access!  Therefore before Restarting the FS1 you should quiesce all host IO and wait 15 minutes for cached data to be flushed to disk.

Updating the FS1 software and selecting the "Restart and update software (disrupts data access)" radio box on the Update Software screen will also update the IOM firmware.

If you discover an IOM that is showing a different firmware version than the rest of the IOM's in your system, you should schedule a maintenance window to Shutdown/Restart the system software as soon as possible.

It is essential that both IOMs run the same FW.  If one IOM has an older Firmware version compared to the other IOM in the Enclosure, a lot of features are incompatible and may cause unwanted behavior.

>> Replacing an IOM is supported in Guided Maintenance.
>> IOM firmware will not be upgraded (or downgraded) if the replacement IOM is at a different firmware version than the surviving IOM, until the system is restarted.
>> It is essential that both IOMs in an Enclosure run the same firmware.
>> Since all IOM's in spare stock are loaded with FW version 0010 and most machines installed in the field are running FW version 001E, you are almost guaranteed to have a mismatch if an IOM is replaced.

>> If you need to replace an IOM, you should inform the customer that it needs to be done during a scheduled outage, and the system software should be Restarted immediately after the IOM is replaced.

>> If you encounter a system where one IOM is already at a different version than the rest of the IOM's, you should encourage the customer to schedule an outage to restart the system software (disruptive software update (DU) will also do the trick).

This is scheduled to be fixed in a future software version, where a replacement IOM will have it's firmware burned to match the existing IOM in the Enclosure during the IOM Guided Maintenance replacement.
