Symptoms

Getting the following error message when trying to SSH to a ZFS Storage Appliance head:

/usr/lib/ak/tools/aksh-wrapper: No such file or directory

Changes

 None

Cause

SFTP is designed to operate on top of SSH, with SSH and SFTP connections both directed to a shared port, 22 by default, and dispatched by the server appropriately.

The issue is port conflict between SSH and SFTP services that may be enabled on ZFSSA.

Go to the ZFS BUI : Configuration > Services > sftp  and check if it is enabled.

If sftp service is enabled, then check if port 22 is already being used by sftp or not.

As port 22 is the default SSH port and it is already being used by SFTP, ssh was failing to connect.

Solution

Once it is confirmed that SFTP is enabled/running and it is using port 22, we have two options:

  1.  Either change the port for SFTP or use different port for SSH.
  2.  Disable SFTP from the ZFS GUI, if it is not needed.

ZFSSA currently puts SSH on 22 and SFTP on 218.

This means that users using SFTP must always reconfigure their clients to use a non-standard port, with related implications for things like firewalls.

We should change ZFSSA so that it can use port 22 for both SSH and SFTP.
