Symptoms

Sun StorageTek SL3000 / Three HP LTO4 tape drives malfunctioning --

Unable to clean two HP LTO4 tape drives

One drive is completely DOWN, all the backup jobs are failing

Changes

The customer has used cleaning cartridges which they have taken from another OEM tape library. It worked on that tape library and they expected that it would work on this SL3000 tape library too.

Cause

Found to be invalid labeling on the cartridges moved as evidenced by the following messages :-

Observed 10 cleaning cartridge barcode labels were INVALID,

Labels were printed and fixed incorrectly

Solution

Informed the customer to change the cleaning cartridge barcode label, as it was reporting "Data Tape" on the cartridge summary report.

" Bar codes for LTO cleaning tapes should end with "CU" and not "L1" or "L2" or "L3" or "L4" or "L5" or "L6" (Where, CU represents Universal Cleaning) and L1 represents a data tape.
Anything other than "CU" will be added as a data tape"

Cleaning barcode labesl should be in the format of " CLNxxxCU ". (Where, CU indicates universal LTO cleaning cartridge label)

The customer replaced the cleaning cartridge barcode and confirmed that the tape drives are working normally
