Symptoms
Booting ILOM rKVMS rcdrom device with Solaris 11 text installer ISO image fails with the following message:
{0} ok boot rcdrom
Boot device: /pci@311/pci@1/usb@0/storage@1/disk@0 File and args:
Error waiting for data completion
Can't open boot device
{0} ok
An ILOM remote rcdrom storage may be enabled through the ILOM WEBGUI browser:

Cause
-> cd /SP/services/kvms/host_storage_device
/SP/services/kvms/host_storage_device
-> show
Targets:
remote
Properties:
mode = miniroot
status = operational
Commands:
cd
show
-> help mode
Properties:
mode : KVMS host storage mode
mode : Possible values = miniroot,remote,disabled
mode : User role required for set = a
If the mode is set to miniroot, change mode to "disabled",during OS installation.
-> set mode=disabled
Solution
The recommended workaround is to temporarily disable miniroot for remote kvms storage
Before you start, get to the HOST's OBP and set auto-boot? to false.
{0} ok setenv auto-boot?=false
{0} ok reset-all
Then log into the SP and perform the following:
-> cd /SP/services/kvms/host_storage_device
/SP/services/kvms/host_storage_device
-> show
/SP/services/kvms/host_storage_device
Targets:
remote
Properties:
mode = miniroot
status = operational
Commands:
cd
show
-> set mode=disabled
Set 'mode' to 'disabled'
NOTE: The location of the text-install ISO image needs to be set from ILOM GUI
Now Access SP/ILOM via WEBGUI and add ISO image as shown by the GUI sample display above (Remote Control-> Redirection-> Launch Remote Console-> Select "KVMS" from remote system console -> "Add" ISO image) -> Finally hit the "Connect" button.
NOTE: Window 7 user, please see docid 2239460.1
Reset the OBP using the serial redirected console from the GUI at this point and check for rcdrom alias then follow through with OS install.
{0} ok reset-all

NOTE: At some point after the OS install, recommend to reset /SP/services/kvms/host_storage_device mode back to original value (miniroot).
If the above workaround does not work you may also use the Solaris 11 USB text installer:
[STEP 1] Download the Solaris 11 USB text installer image the use Solaris 11 utility [usbcopy] to create a bootable USB image. If you have a Linux or other Solaris version, you may use dd command [dd if=<path_to_image.usb> of=/dev/rdsk/<usbdevice>] to create a bootable USB image. (The USB device must have a valid format/filesystem: fat32)
EXAMPLE:
root@solaris:~/Downloads# usbcopy ./sol-11_3-text-sparc.usb
Image type: dd-able Sparc
Found the following USB devices:
0: /dev/rdsk/c3t0d0p0 7.6 GB SanDisk Cruzer Blade 1.00
Enter the number of your choice: 0
WARNING: All data on your USB storage will be lost.
Are you sure you want to install to

[STEP 2] Attach the bootable USB device created in [STEP 1] into the USB port of the system and boot the system from this USB device.
