Symptoms

The "Mgmt" memory usage as seen on the BUI status screen is increasing when looking at Analytics data older than a few hours.

This figure is describing the amount of kernel memory the appliance management process, AKD, is consuming.

The process is currently a 32-bit process, so the theoretical max size for this process is 4 GB, typically the process may run into various memory allocation errors when reaching ~3GB in size.

Cause

Due to a bug in the AKD code, it would re-encode analytics datasets regardless of if the dataset was already open and encoded.

This would multiply the memory usage for the analytics dataset.

Many times logfiles will be filled with 'memory allocation errors' which are related to Analytics.

The issue is reported in Bug 16860388 - "Analytics always re-encodes datasets read in"

Solution

This issue has been fixed in Appliance Firmware Micro Release 2013.1.4.11 for  the ZFS Storage Appliance.

As the latest publicly available release is 2013.1.4.2,  a Service Request is required to get access to the latest Micro release.

Whenever a more recent Micro release becomes publicly available it will be listed in the KM Doc: Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance: Software Updates - Document ID  2021771.1

Other useful information about the overhead of Analytics collection is described in this KM Doc: Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance: Potential Performance Impact using Analytics  - Document ID 2019842.1
