Symptoms

While trying to install Oracle Virtual Box (Vbox) on an Exalytics bare metal server (P2) with Linux version 2.6.32-100.23.1.el5, the server crashed.
Just before crash, the console showed messages like:

Starting udev:Call Trace:

The server did not automatically restart and had to be power cycled from the ILOM to restart.

Cause

Analysis of both operating system and hardware log files failed to find any problems with either the OS or hardware.  The OS logs do show stack traces that are associated with vbox modules:

Virtual box is not a supported software application for Exalytics bare metal servers.  The attempt to install an unsupported product may have caused a kernel or file conflict which then caused the machine to crash.

Solution

Virtual Box is not a supported software application on Exalytics servers.  For a listing of supported Exalytics software, please see the certification guide in <Document 1505616.2> - Information Center: Certification Information For Oracle Exalytics.

For information on Virtual box, (including supported servers), please see Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Version 3.5 is Now Available <Document 1537144.1>.
