Symptoms

ZFS Storage Appliance system log is reporting:

2015-11-23 21:18:17 smbd[28018] error smb_lgrp_getsid: no such domain SID
2015-11-23 21:18:17 smbd[28018] error smb_lgrp_iterate: database operation error

These events were continually occurring.

Cause

A Preferred Domain Controller ( 'PDC' ) was configured under:

configuration services smb>

2015-11-23 21:18:17    smbd[28018] error smb_lgrp_getsid: no such domain SID
2015-11-23 21:18:17    smbd[28018] error smb_lgrp_iterate: database operation error

The events above occur due to a SMB local group attempting to request the domain SID - but it appears as though the Domain Controller was not responding in time, as the SID was not in the domain table.

As a PDC was in use, the appliance was continually accessing a Domain Controller ( 'DC' ) that - in this case - was under very high load.

Once we changed the PDC setting - to another domain controller in the same Active Directory site - the issue went away.

Solution

This was not a problem with the ZFS Storage Appliance.

To fix this issue, in the long term, the installed memory on the Domain Controller was increased - so it could handle a higher load.
