Cause

 Read Perm Errors

Solution

Read errors will can fall into one of the following categories:

1. Physical damage occurred on the tape after it was written. -

  • Tape received rough handling or was dropped causing edge damage.
  • Internal problem in the cartridge.
  • Damage from another tape drive after the tape was written.

2. The creating drive may be defective.

  • Possibly it was writing data off-track/skewed.
    • Writing off-track can damage data on an adjacent track.
  • Any other timing or alignment issue that would cause interchangeability problems between drives.
  • The creating drive may be the only drive that can read the tape back.
    • Keep the creating drive until all tapes that fall into this error condition have been read back.

Process to follow for tapes with a permanent read error:

1. If another copy of the data exists, clone it so that you now have 2 copies of the tape again. Certify the tape. (see note belowl)

2. If you do not have another copy of the data, copy all data off the tape that you can. The tape may need to be sent in for data recovery if this is the only copy of your data and the unreadable data is needed.

Perform these steps if you want to certify the tape to see if it is acceptable to be re-used.

Note - this step will be destructive to any data still left on the tape.

  • Once you have copied all of the data off the tape, certify the tape that took the perm read error.
  • To certify the tape, write on it until it is full using any data.
  • If the tape passes the certify test then it is acceptable to be reused as the tape is not physically damaged.
