Cause

Confusion with cables.

Solution

There isn't an actual Ethernet port on the back of the drive.  It is a serial connection on the back of the drive and we connect a serial to Ethernet cable that allows you to connect an Ethernet cable to back of the drive tray for the drive.

Just look at the bad drive connections closely before you disconnect anything and you'll see where the Ethernet to serial cable connects to the back of the drive.

The SL8500 Service Guide covers the various cable connections on the back of the different drive types.
