Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

While using Sun Storage Common Array Manager (CAM) 6.10.2 to upgrade the firmware on a drive model H7230AS60SUN3.0T from A600 to A6C0, CAM returns the following error:

Incompatible firmware image. Skipping Tray.X Slot.Z

Note: This problem has no functional impact to the drive and array.

Cause

Every drive firmware file bundled with CAM has a header including an "upgrade path". The "upgrade path" enables CAM to determine if the firmware currently installed on the drive can be upgraded to the target level.

Unfortunately the firmware file bundled in CAM 6.10.2 for this specific drive model H7230AS60SUN3.0T does not include the firmware A600 in this "upgrade path".

Note: This issue only applies to the Sun Storage 2500-M2 Arrays with the drive model H7230AS60SUN3.0T running the firmware A600 and with CAM 6.10.2.

Solution

If you have CAM 6.9 on Windows or Linux, the solution is to apply the following corresponding patch:

  • Windows: 147661-05 or higher
  • Linux: 147662-05 or higher

The solution for CAM 6.10.2 and Solaris SPARC or x86 is available with the patch 147663-01.

Refer to <Document 1296274.1> How to Download Common Array Manager (CAM) Software and Patches.

If the customer cannot apply the above solution for Solaris SPARC or x86, because of limitations with its production and/or environment, you can proceed with the following workaround:

For CAM 6.9 on Solaris or for CAM 6.10, please proceed with the following steps to workaround this issue:

  1. Please ensure that there is no I/O on the array before proceeding with the drive firmware upgrade. Non disruptive drive firmware upgrade is not supported.

  2. Execute the following command to upgrade the firmware on the drive:

    # /opt/SUNWsefms/bin/csmservice -i -a <arrayname> -Z ALLCODE -t Drive -p /opt/SUNWstkcam/share/fw/images/disk/D_H7230AS60SUN3.0T_A6C0_SNM.dlp -c <drive>

    Example:
    # /opt/SUNWsefms/bin/csmservice -i -a <myarray> -Z ALLCODE -t Drive -p /opt/SUNWstkcam/share/fw/images/disk/D_H7230AS60SUN3.0T_A6C0_SNM.dlp -c Tray.00.Drive.01
    Analyzing Firmware
Servicing request to update Disk Drives H7230AS60SUN3.0T
    ... Loading H7230AS60SUN3.0T firmware
    ... Activating H7230AS60SUN3.0T
    Completed request to update H7230AS60SUN3.0T
    Firmware install completed.
    #

  3. You can resume the I/O on the array.
