Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Drive tray serial number disappeared at drive failure.

If the drive is replaced the drive tray serial number will be marked "Unknown" and the drive tray serial number must be re-populated.

Cause

The drive-tray serial number was architected to be associated with the drive manufacturing serial number.

Not clear on why it was architected in this manner.

If the drive is not replaced and the drive serial number does not change it was intended to be available via SLC starting at SL8500 code 8.31. But there is an unexpected problem in the code.

Documented in Bug_18015838.

Solution

SL8500 8.51 code.

SL3000 scheduled in the 4.40 release tentatively scheduled Feb_2016.

Outstanding RFE is 22047437 to change the behavior when the drive is changed to not requiring the need to re-enter the tray serial number.
