Symptoms

Customer is unable to create new project on the ZFSSA.

Cause

In this particular case, the deferred updates had not been applied since at least 2011.1.6.0 was running on the system, causing the zpool version to be very old.

Systems running 2013.1.x and newer will attempt to set some new variables, for encryption among other things, when creating a new project.

These parameters were not available in the zpool version of older 2011.1.x releases, thus project creation fails.

Solution

Apply deferred updates:

    BUI: Maintenance -> System  -> Apply in the Deferred Updates section

    CLI: maintenance system updates apply

These updates can be applied live on a system and will not affect production.

If your system is a remote replication target or source for replications going to older appliances, please refer to document "Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance: Remote Replication Compatibility" (Doc ID 1958039.1) for compatibility information.

Once the deferred updates has been applied projects can be created again.

If the system is running on an IDR (Interim Diagnostic Relief) version, the deferred updates will be unavailable from the BUI/CLI. If this issue occur while running an IDR, open a Service Request to Oracle Support to get help.

Internal information for NAS TSC:

In shared shell/webex exit to the OS shell and run

  (Pool version 30 is needed for Encryption, run zpool upgrade -v for a list of the available versions)

(DO NOT upgrade the system pool)

This is equivalent to applying the deferred updates on the running version.
