Symptoms

Excessive unrecoverable read errors may occur on certain disk drive models.   Affected drive models and the products which may contain them are listed below:

Vendor Model # Oracle Model # Installed Part Number        Disk Type FW version        Product Used
HUS156060VLS600        HUS1560SCSUN600G        7047035 600GB SAS 15KRPM Disk        A880 7320, 7420, ZFS Backup Appliance, Sun Disk Shelf
    542-0428     7120

Note:  Occurrence of this issue is dependent on the extent of workload on the drives listed.

Cause

The vendor has determined that unrecoverable read errors may occur on certain disk drive models when a burst of I/O activity follows an extended idle period.

Solution

A firmware update is available to address the condition described above for the 600GB drives listed.

Please upgrade to Appliance Firmware Release AK 2013.1 Update 6.12 which contains the fix for this issue.

PLEASE NOTE: It is believed that 300GB and 900GB drives are minimally impacted by this issue.

If you are substantially affected by this issue on 300GB and/or 900GB drives, please engage Oracle Support by opening a Service Request.

Engineering has requested that if we do see failures on these 300/900 GB drives in the field, and we feel they are attributed to the oil leak issue we should make Engineering aware and try to CPAS drives back for evaluation.

NOTE for Storage-TSC Engineers:

All CPAS requests for disks that are created for Oracle Internal IT now and in the future should go to  tejinder.singh@oracle.com (TJ)  until told otherwise.

If you need a shipping address, contact TJ.  (Reference Bug 23287679)
