Cause

The vendor has determined that unrecoverable read errors may occur on certain disk drive models when a burst of I/O activity follows an extended idle period.

Solution

To apply the A720 firmware that alleviates the condition described above, follow these instructions.

NOTE: Updating drive firmware in the FS1-2 requires an outage.  Drives cannot receive IO during a drive firmware upgrade.

While it is possible that Pilot HDDs and MaxRep3 HDDs could be affected by this issue, there is currently no way to address the problem in those subsystems.  As such those HDDs will be replace only on failure and not subject to this firmware update.  Replacement drives will have the firmware.

How to Verify Current Disk Drive Firmware

To check the Drive Enclosures, use the Oracle FS System Manager GUI or CLI (fscli) to display the drive model and firmware versions to see if they require this fix:

  • Oracle FS System Manager GUI:
    1. Select the System Tab, Hardware then Drive Enclosures
    2. Right click on the first Drive Enclosure and select View
    3. In the resultant pop-up window, select the first drive under the Replaceable Unit section
    4. View the details for that drive in the adjacent window to confirm the Model and Firmware Number

      Hitachi View Drive Enclosure

    5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the remaining drives.
    6. Repeat steps 2 through 5 for the remaining Drive Enclosures.

  • Oracle FS System Manager CLI:

    C:>fscli login -u administrator -oracleFs <shared_ip_of_FS1>
    Password:

How to Update Disk Drive Firmware

So as not to create a new Service Request, be sure to disable Call Home before starting any firmware upgrades. See Document 1942676.1 FS System: How to Disable Call-Home to Prevent Automatic Service Request ASR Generation for details.

If one or more of the affected drives are identified, the FS1-2 must first be upgraded to R6.2.2 or later.  Please see Document 1967797.1 FS System: How to Download Software and Firmware Updates for the FS1-2. Upgrade the Oracle FS System Manager software using the directions in Document 1968129.1 FS System: FS1-2 System Upgrade R6.x to R6.x Procedures. For those FS1-2 systems already running R6.2.2, the drive firmware files should already be staged.

GSS service management has decided we should publish this article even though Patch 22561674 will no longer be the correct patch. The understanding is that this article will be updated when a stable release exists. In the meantime, customers will need to open an SR anyway, and support engineers should assist customers to obtain the correct software version. All versions of 6.2.2 and beyond contain the fix.

NOTE: While upgrading the Oracle FS System Manager software does not require an outage, the drive firmware upgrade does. As such, customers may wish to consider taking a single outage. System must have a Normal status with no System Alerts prior to starting any upgrade.

With the FS1-2 running R6.2.2 or higher, upgrade the drive firmware:

  • Using the GUI to update Drive Enclosure drives:
    1. Select Support tab
    2. Select Software and Firmware in the navigation tree
    3. From the menu bar select Actions and then Update Drive Firmware or from the main window, right click and select Update Drive Firmware
    4. In the resultant pop-up window check all the boxes in the Install? column and then OK
      FS1-2 DW Upgrade

NOTE: While only there are only two drives affected by this issue, it is best to take advantage of the existing outage to update all drive firmware versions.  Doing so will also prepare the FS1-2 for future Enclosure add-ons will also be upgraded before they are put into production.

    5. Confirm the upgrade will be disruptive
    6. System will do a Cold Start
NOTE: after this initial Cold Start, the Controllers will reboot to a certain point in ConMan and then download the actual drive firmware.  After which a Cold Start Failed message will appear and a second Cold Start will take place.  This is normal.

  • Using the CLI to upgrade Drive Enclosure drives:
      1. Use the following command to confirm that R6.2.0 has been staged.  At the end will be a list of drive firmware currently installed:
        C:\>fscli software_update -list
