Symptoms

Trying to upgrade IB switch, multirack IB network from version 2.1.3 to version 2.1.5 (patch 12.1.2.1.1 and patch 12.1.2.1.2 - 20748218) we see following error doing the precheck and running the upgrade:

Cause

Customer is having multirack with 3 Exadata, 3 BigData and 1 Storage Server

IB network of this customer, with 3 Exadata + 3 Big Data + 1 Storage Expansion is not supported by verify-topology (tool include in "patchmgr"), version checked 12.1.2.2.0, 12.1.2.1.1, 12.1.2.1.2, so is not possible to pass correctly the "patchmgr" pre requisites, and due to this the upgrade of IB switch was done with the option "-force", method preferred to the manual upgrade.

Solution

The IB switches were upgraded using the patchmgr tool and with the "-force" option (./patchmgr -ibswitches -upgrade -force)

Before to upgrade each IB switch was checked with the "./patchmgr –ibswitches -upgrade -ibswitch_precheck", from the log generated it can checked that only there were errors due to verify-topology.

To patch to IB version 2.1.5 it was used 12.1.2.1.2, it was no used 12.1.2.2.0 patch,as this patch fails too due to verify-topology as the IB network has ExaData and BigData racks connected
