Symptoms

Unrecoverable read errors that follow idle conditions with a burst of I/O activity may occur on certain disk drives.

Cause

This error condition occurs on certain 300GB, 600GB, 900GB, 1.2TB model disk drives in a variety of Oracle products.

Solution

Implement the new disk firmware as it improves the  reliability of the drives.

The output of the command iostat -En provides Vendor/Product/Revision/Serial_No.
Caution: It has been observed that this information is sometimes obsolete if the disk has been previously hot-swapped and the system not rebooted.

<span class="sBugInternalContent"># iostat -En</span>
<span class="sBugInternalContent">@ c0t5000CCA03C29CFB8d0 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 0 Transport Errors: 0</span>
<span class="sBugInternalContent">@ Vendor: HITACHI&nbsp; Product: H106030SDSUN300G Revision: A4C0 Serial No: 1</span><span class="sBugInternalContent">233NRZV0D</span>

Explorer output will have a disks/diskinfo file that can be referenced for up to date information after a disk swap.

To find the firmware on a hardware raid volume using the raidctl utility:

# raidctl -l -g 0.0.0 1
Disk    Vendor  Product           Firmware        Capacity        Status  HSP
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    0.0.0   HITACHI H106030SDSUN300G  A4C0            300G            GOOD    N/A

    # raidctl -l -g 0.1.0 1

    0.1.0   HITACHI H106030SDSUN300G  A4C0            300G            GOOD    N/A

A firmware update is required to mitigate the effect of the long idle time of the drive. The firmware is programmed to initiate periodic random seeks in the background.

A maintenance window should be planned as disk firmware upgrades require the system be idle.  Refer to the individual patch README's for the firmware install procedures.

To obtain the A4C0 firmware please see patch 149675-06.
To obtain the A720 firmware please see patch 150940-04.
To obtain the A880 firmware please see patch 148959-08.

Note - Disks in a HW RAID volume must use the firmware in the related Attachments section with the HMP's fwupdate command & not the patch.
The fwupdate requires unencrypted firmware and the patches contain encrypted firmware.
