Customer want to re-label 200+ T10KB MVC ALP tapes.

This is to change the recorded volser on each of the MVC from BAxxxx to BZxxxx
All the tapes were DRAINED and removed for the MVCPOOL.

A RTD was varied offline and changed to 3590 emulation to be used as native drive to run the IEHINITT re-label batch job from the MVS host.

Symptoms

The IEHINITT batch job fails to initialize ALP tapes with a permanent error FSC 40B3

A write was attempted to an ALP that isn't available for writing.

Cause

Tape engineering analysis shows the tape was NOT re-initialized to a non-ALP tape, therefore the IEHINIT will not be able to write on the tape, until the tape is no longer an ALP tape.
From engineering standpoint the 40B3 error is normal and expected for this type of host operations and status of tape.

MVS utilities can not deal with an ALP tape.

Solution

Tapes will have to be converted to standard tapes using VSM tools, and then can be re-labeled using MVS tools. The tapes can be added back to VSM tape pool.

Proposed solution is to turn VSM ALP tapes to standard tapes before re-label process (IEHINIT) can be performed.
This can be achieved either online by using the undocumented SET MOUNT command referenced in document id 1386631.1 or offline by using the Make Data Tape utility.
