StorageTek SL150 Modular Tape Library - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

The sl150 has 2x SAS LTO6 drives connected direct to the backups host which are passed through to the VMware
Windows 2012R does not see "unknown medium changer" in device manager, but does see 2 HP LTO6 tape drives.

Changes

 New configuration.

Cause

VMWare does not support scsi multi luns environment.

VMWare detected 2 LTO tape drives as t0 lun 0 and t1 lun 0 as ACTIVE, but t0 lun 1 as DEAD.

Solution

Bypass VMWare.

Refer to http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1016407

Note: ESXi/ESX supports vendor-supported parallel SCSI tape drives and tape libraries only. If you are using a tape drive library (versus using a stand-alone tape drive), the library must be multi-target, and not multi-LUN. Ensure that the tape drive's virtual target ID in the virtual machine's configuration is set to be the same as the physical target ID.
