Symptoms

fwupdate Fails with Message "ERROR: Could not identify host type"

root@4S:~# fwupdate list controller
Get Device ID command failed: Unknown (0x7E)
Get Device ID command failed: Unknown (0x7E)
ERROR: Could not identify host type

Cause

This is caused by a bug in Hardware Maintenance Pack ( hmp ) that fails to update the host profiles when the OS is updated to a newer release.

Solution

The "Get device id ..." messages are indicating that HMP is not able to communicate with the XSCFU.  These messages can be ignored.  See doc 2056911.1

The issue is not yet resolved but can be worked around by performing the following steps:

 Workaround:

Remove all the files under /etc/ssm/hmp/    (do not remove the directory)

Example:

cd /etc/ssm/hmp
rm -f *

Rerun the fwupdate update command.

When fwupdate is run after the files are deleted it will repopulate the files in the /etc/ssm/hmp directory.
