Symptoms

Brocade switch code v7.4.0a brought in new functionality (ELS RDP frames) that causes problems in the drive interface only on T10000A and T10000B and older drives.  It also affect the T10000C and T10000D drives however there will be a future code change for this problem for these models. All 9x40 models are also affected.

Cause

Brocade switch code v7.4.0a brought in new functionality (ELS RDP frames) that causes problems in the drive interface only on T10000A and T10000B and older drives.  This brought out a hole on the Qlogic code running in the tape drives.  The tape drive should reject this frame but it does not.

Solution

For all Storagetek Tape Drives Disable the RDP polling on the switch.

Note that the RDP polling cycle defaults to 1 hour (polls every hour unless rejected) in the switch FOS v7.4.0 code and above.

RDP is disabled by default in older switch code, so this 1 hour default is what has exposed the issue.

Process:

The RDP function can be turned off by setting the RDP polling interval to 0.

This can be done on the fly and should be set off for any switches with Oracle T10KA/B tape devices attached.

The RDP function can be turned off following these steps in the switch configuration.

Enter switch “configure” command, reply ‘y’ to Fabric parameters,  press enter until the RDP polling Cycle option is presented enter ‘0’ to disable it.

The press enter again until it exits and saves the configuration options.
