Symptoms

With no apparent reason, on a Solaris 11.2 server driver qlcnic reports the following messages:

Here we can see the supported speed is 10GB, but nothing is configured or connected yet:

Cause

Oracle Hardware Management Pack Libraries (HMP)  is initiating the problem ,
HMP calls dladm show-linkprop command and this triggers the problem :

In the Solaris OS the  svc:/system/sp/management:default service is working.
This service start the daemon /usr/lib/ssm/hwmgmtd
This daemon periodically launches various commands to collect and analyze the state of the system.
One of the commands is /usr/sbin/dladm show-linkprop -o link value -p mac-address, which triggers these messages.

This is explained on this bug:
Bug 21180070 - dladm show-linkprop triggers qlcnic(0) started. qlcnic version 140515-v2.1.0
--> Closed as duplicate of Bug (RFE) 20784731   : dladm show-linkprop seems to initialize the qlcnic driver

Solution

This message means the NIC Instance (qlcnic) is being started , this happens when the device is opened by an application.
This operation does not interrupt the FCoE I/O, since the FCoE and NIC firmware are separate.
On this scenario this is just an annoying message , do not care about it.

Engineering is evaluating to make changes in qlcnic driver to not print such messages on interface start,
this is considered a Request For Enhancement on Bug (RFE) 20784731

In order to avoid this messages, until a final solution is provided, these are possible workarounds:

1) Disable HMP service svc:/system/sp/management:default :
# svcadm disable svc:/system/sp/management:default

2) Plumb all NIC interfaces (ie using ipadm create-ip) , that way the qlcnic instances will
always be in started state and the start operation will not be done every time an application opens the interfaces.
