Symptoms

- Boot command boots the preinstalled solaris image, and it gets to the solaris installation text menu, but then they get WARNINGS about firmware upgrade needed for emulex cards breaking into the console session, so customer cannot complete the Solaris setup.

WARNING: emlxs0: Firmware update required.
(To trigger an update, a manual HBA or link reset using luxadm, fcadm, or emlxadm is required.)
WARNING: emlxs1: Firmware update required.
(To trigger an update, a manual HBA or link reset using luxadm, fcadm, or emlxadm is required.)

Cause

Emulex FC HBA card firmware update messages disrupt Solaris installation text menu.

Solution

1. Reboot the server a few times , this should allow completion of the Solaris installation text menu.

If that does fix the problem, try this workaround

Workaround:

Upgrade the firmware of the FC HBA by booting off Install Media and going into shell.

From the shell run "fcinfo hba-port" command to get list of the fc hba port c# seen by media vs those seen by host OS instance.

Then follow this document to upgrade firmware:

Firmware Update Required. (A Manual Hba Reset Or Link Reset (Using Luxadm Or Fcadm) Is Required (Doc ID 1356876.1)

As explained on that document you will need to run:

luxadm -e forcelip /dev/cfg/c#

(# is controller number)

on c# listed by "fcinfo hba-port" command while booted of Install Media.
