Applies to:

Oracle Key Manager - Version 3.0.1 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Commvault backup utility showing several tape drives in write protect mode or flagged bad media.

Changes

Customer added several new LTO5 tape drive to their tape library and enrolled them with a local OKM cluster.

Cause

Commvault requests a tape to be mounted into a certain tape drive then waits for the tape drive to report the header data to ensure they had the correct media mounted. The tape drives were not able to read the header file.

The tape drives were encryption drives enrolled to a KMA cluster. Four tape drives were not enrolled properly and the tape drives were not receiving encryption keys, therefore not able to read the tape header nor apply the encryption keys.

Solution

The local FE identified four tape drives with read/write inconsistencies.  Two of the tape drives had the same KMA Agent name.  We were able to un-enroll and re-enroll these tape drives and create a new agent id for one of the drives with the duplicate name.

After getting the tape drives enrolled properly the customer reported no more issues with Commvault reporting bad media or write protected tape drives.
