Symptoms

Fabric Interconnect displays an internal drive error when booting:

Primary Master: Hitachi #### / S.M.A.R.T. Status Bad, Backup and Replace. / Press F1 to Resume...

Changes

 Problem may be encountered during a reboot of the Fabric Interconnect.

Cause

The S.M.A.R.T. HDD errors indicates hard HDD problems as well as the SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl300) errors found in /var/log/kern.log as noted below:

If it is 2U chassis (F1-4) , Front Panel needs to be replaced immediately - HDD resides in the Front Panel.  In case of 4U chassis  (F1-15) can try to power cycle chassis, but will end up replacing Front Panel anyway.  In short, if there are a HDD errors, replace Front panel.

 

Solution

Replacing Front Panel resolves the issue.
