Symptoms

Attempting to upgrade T4-x system firmware from 8.2.0.a to 8.7.2.b via the ILOM Browser User Interface (BUI) fails with a popup message stating "Package Structure Is Corrupted". This also happens trying to upgrade from 8.2.2.c or 8.3.0.c to 8.7.2.b or 8.8.1.c, other versions may also be affected.

Changes

Cause

This issue is an ILOM BUI issue and it has been fixed in ILOM 3.2.4.1 (SysFW 8.6.0.b or later):

- SPARC T3/T4/T5 Series System Firmware and Patch Level Checklist (Doc ID 1400005.1)

which means that minimum SysFW 8.6.0.b is needed to upgrade to later SysFW versions: 8.7.x, 8,8.x via the BUI (thus the SysFW needs to upgraded in 2x phases, first to 8.6.0.b and then to 8.7.x or 8,8.x), otherwise the CLI can be used to upgrade the SysFW.

See below internal bugs for more information:

- Bug 21240237 : T4-1B SysFW Upgrade to 8.7.2.b via ILOM BUI fails
- Bug 17816477 : [X3-2/B]Downgraded ilom firmware failed via webgui.

Solution

The following workarounds can be used (advise is to reset the sp before the system firmware upgrade)

- From SP (CLI) - ILOM
  - poweroff system
    # shutdown -i0 -g0 -y
    {0} ok
    -> stop /SYS (ilom)
  - update firmware (available protocols depends on the installed system fw, for more information look at the ilom documentation)
    -> set /SYS keyswitch_state=normal
    -> load [-force] -source [protocol:tftp|ftp|sftp|scp|http|https]://[username:password@server_ip_or_server_hostname]/[file-path]/[filename:image.pkg]
  - reset sp
    -> reset /SP
  - poweron system
    -> start /SYS
    -> start /HOST/console

- From Solaris & ILOM
  - update firmware
    # pwd   <- should be /tmp/patch/[patch_id]
    # ./sysfwdownload [image].pkg
  - poweroff system
    # shutdown -i0 -g0 -y
    {0} ok
    -> stop /SYS
  - update firmware (available protocols depends on the installed system fw, for more information look at the ilom documentation)
    -> set /SYS keyswitch_state=normal
    -> show /SP/firmware/localimage
    -> load [-force] -source /SP/firmware/localimage or load -source [protocol:tftp|ftp|sftp|scp|http|https]://127.0.0.1
  - reset /sp
    -> reset /SP
  - poweron system
    -> start /SYS
    -> start /HOST/console
 or
 - update firmware
   -> set /SYS keyswitch_state=normal
   # pwd   <- should be /tmp/patch/[patch_id]
   # ./sysfwdownload -u [image].pkg
   which will perform:
   a) Download System Firmware image
   b) Power down host
   c) Update System Firmware
   d) Reset SC
   e) Power on host
