Symptoms

luxadm -e offline fails with Bad file number message:

# luxadm -e offline /dev/rdsk/c0t6006016074E0280079CF804C3609E511d0s2
Error: can't acquire "/devices/scsi_vhci/ssd@g6006016074e0280079cf804c3609e511:c,raw": Bad file number

Cause

The device is an EMC device.
The customer is running EMC UniSphere software.

The customer stopped the EMC UniSphere agent and then he was able to offline the device.

The EMC UniSphere agent was keeping the device busy and that caused the luxadm -e offline to fail.

Once the agent was stopped then the luxadm -e offline command worked successfully.

Solution

Stopping the EMC UniSphere agent freed up the device and allowed the luxadm -e offline command to complete successfully.

If you are not using EMC Unisphere software then this knowledge doc does not apply to your situation and more analysis is needed.
