Symptoms

This is an M3000 server with Solaris 10 that boots from SAN , server uses FC HBA port /pci@1,70000/pci@0/pci@0/SUNW,qlc@0/ and the boot disk is LUN 1 partition 0 on disk array controller WWN 5001438011XXXXXX

From the console, these are the errors when boot from SAN :

{1} ok boot

Rebooting with command: boot
Boot device: /pci@1,70000/pci@0/pci@0/SUNW,qlc@0/fp@0,0/disk@w5001438011XXXXXX,1:a
File and args:

Firmware version 4.03.02
Fibre Channel Link down
Possible causes: No cable, incorrect connection mode or data rate
SFP state: 8Gb Present

Read failed
ERROR: FCode Aborted.

If we boot the server from a internal disk , the server boots fine and we can see that the FC HBA shows a NOT CONNECTED status :

c2  qlc0   21000024ff3XXXXX  SG-XPCIE2FC-QF8   2.03     NOT CONNECTED  /pci@1,700000/pci@0/pci@0/SUNW,qlc@0

and fcinfo hba-port command shows no connectivity to the FC Switch :

Cause

There is a link problem between FC HBA and FC switch.

The problem could be on the FC switch port (SFP), the FC cable or the FC HBA port.

Solution

Follow this document to troubleshoot this problem:

Troubleshooting Solaris[TM] 10 and Above (not for Solaris[TM] 8 & 9) SAN Fibre Channel (FC) HBA connectivity issues. (Doc ID 1303745.1)

or if possible follow this other simple steps:

1. Connect FC cable to another free /non used FC HBA port and check if the link comes online....if that is the case, that would mean FC cable and FC switch port ID are fine  ... then the FC HBA must be replaced.

2. If there are errors observed on FC switch port where the HBA is connected, then move the FC cable to another free port on the switch, and let us know if that solves the problem.
(if the zoning is based on port number , you will need to modify the switch zoning to reflect the new port number)
or
if there are no free ports on the FC switch, replace the SFP on FC switch port

3. If the problem persist, next step is replace the FC cable between HBA port and FC switch

4. If the problem persist, then a service downtime maybe required to stop the server and replace the FC HBA

On this particular case, the problem was solved after replacing FC HBA.
