Symptoms

The NFS client servers are not able to create any volumes on the guest vServers.  The program is failing with an error message: 'Unable to access file system at 192.xxx.xxx.xxx: rpc mount export: RPC: Timed out'.

On the nodes, "showmount -e x.x.x.x", works with the direct IP address of the active storage NAS head - but, it does not work with the 'floating' IP address of the storage 192.xxx.xxx.xxx

In the ZFS BUI, Configuration -> Network -> 192.xxx.xxx.xxx  is Green.

[root@ 01 ~]# showmount -e 192..x.x.x
rpc mount export: RPC: Timed out
[root@a 01 ~]# showmount -e 10.x.x.x
rpc mount export: RPC: Timed out

Changes

Cause

In this example, we do not see any RPC timeout errors logged on the NAS Appliance.

Solution

Tests run with dig -x commands show that the DNS servers of the customer are slow to respond to requests.

The DNS servers did not have any reverse lookup data for the IP addresses that the customer was using.

Once the 'reverse lookup' DNS SRV records were added, the RPC time out messages disappeared and the customer's applications (in this case, Exadata) work without errors.
