Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Apply might fail or IXP can be unstable after PIC system was upgraded to 10.1.

Any commands on IXP return an error:

cfguser@ixp0001-1a ~]$ prod.state
sh: fork: retry: Resource temporarily unavailable

Changes

PIC system was upgraded to 10.1 recently.

Cause

In PIC 10.1, for optimized performances, each IXP processes have more threads that can cause OS limits to be reached.

Solution

This limits can be increased using following procedure:

  1. Check out file:
    rcstool co /etc/security/limits.d/90-nproc.conf
  2. Edit file and change value from 1024 to 2048 of line "soft nproc"
  3. Check in file:
    rcstool ci /etc/security/limits.d/90-nproc.conf
  4. Reboot server.
