Symptoms

T5-2 ILOM inaccessible via SSH (ie ILOM fails to respond to ping) or HTTPs
WEB GUI appears hung

Cause

The following items could slow / hang the ILOM:

  1. Old system firmware which has known memory leaks
  2. The network switch connected to the ILOM netmgmt port MUST be set to auto-negotiation (Doc 1637051.1)
  3. Oracle Hardware Management Pack (OHMP) prior version 2.3.3 can affect ILOM/host communication (Doc 2045912.1). Please see: bug 20672065
  4. OPS Center prior 12.2.1 can affect ILOM communication
  5. VLAN tagging must be properly configured
  6. Aggressive Nessus scanning on ILOM firmware 3.2.9 or 3.2.10 (causes hang or ILOM Out-of-Memory)

Solution

  1. System firmware prior 9.3.0.b (ILOM 3.2.4) released Nov. 2014 contain known memory leaks which have hung many ILOMs.  Please upgrade system firmware beyond this version.
  2. The auto-negotiation problem is resolved by ensuring that the network switch connected to the ILOM is set to auto-negotiation.
  3. The OHMP problem is resolved by upgrading the OS to S11.2 SRU 14 or higher which contains OHMP 2.3.3.  The OHMP sp/management daemon can be disabled as a workaround per doc 2045912.
      Also, lower the BMC's speed to USB 1.0 (& then reboot Solaris) via modifying file ehci.conf with:

         ehci-port-forced-to-companion = 0x2;
  4. The OPS Center problem is resolved by upgrading it to 12.2.1.
  5. VLAN tagging was added to FW 9.3.0 & 8.6.0 (not available for T5xx0) & requires config of vlan_id in /SP/network if configured in the ILOM's network switch.
  6. Workaround: Disabling the ipmi interface when firmware 3.2.9 or 3.2.10 in use.
    Resolution:  Upgrade to ILOM 4.0 or 3.2.11 will resolve (when available).  bug 26949365 / 26950368
