Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 1946148.1 : Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance: ZS3 appliances may have an incorrect boot device setting due to missing internal USB drive
In this Document
Applies to:Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-4 - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases] Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-BA - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases] 7000 Appliance OS (Fishworks) SymptomsSome Oracle ZFS Storage appliances might have shipped from the factory without an internal USB Drive. While this drive is not used by the appliance, its absence may cause an incorrect BIOS boot device order after installation of the appliance kit (AK) software. This will result in an unbootable system. Note: The ZS3-ES is not affected by this boot order issue and will continue to be shipped without the USB drive. New shipments of the ZS3-4 will have the USB drive installed to prevent the issue from occurring. The presence of "[P B USB:02.82;01 Unigen PSA4000]" or similar in the list of BIOS boot devices denotes the presence of this internal USB drive.
CauseWithout the USB drive installed, and exacerbated when solid state disks are not present, the BIOS boot device order might be incorrectly set whereby the HDD boot devices fall below the PXE (network) devices after AK installation. This will result in the system not booting the appliance kit as it attempts to boot from network devices instead of HDD devices.
SolutionIf a ZS3-2, ZS3-4 or ZS3-BA system attempts to boot from other than one of the HDD boot devices (for example PXE), follow the on-screen prompts to enter BIOS and ensure the HDD boot devices are listed first in the Boot -> Boot Device Priority submenu.
On non-NAS platforms that utilize these servers, the internal USB drive functions as a repository for Oracle Installation Assistant (OSA) - which streamlines installation of supported operating systems and firmware - or as a backup device for the software that resides on Oracle Engineered Systems. As mentioned above, this drive is not currently used in the case of Oracle ZFS Storage appliances. Attachments This solution has no attachment |
